Origin, growth and use of the Pleurotus mushroom
The Pleurotus grows worldwide in temperate and subtropical forests. It is mainly found on deciduous trees. Very rarely, this mushroom is found on coniferous trees. It usually spreads on logs and thick branches, sometimes up to many meters high. In Central Europe, it is a frequent guest in deciduous forests. Oyster mushrooms are extremely easy to grow and thrive growing on almost any substrate, from coffee grounds to straw to paper. Therefore, it is also very suitable for home cultivation to meet one's own needs.
The Pleurotus ostreatus, like the mushroom and the shiitake, is one of the cultivated mushrooms that is most commonly grown in large quantities worldwide. It is a tasty and edible mushroom. It plays a central role in Asian cuisine, but nowadays it can also be found more and more in European cuisine. Especially since more and more people are opting for a vegetarian diet, it often serves as a tasty meat substitute.
In addition, the Pleurotus has long been used as a medicinal mushroom in various cultures.
